Awards $65,000 for new initiative at Wellesley High School
For the 2006-2007 year, The Human Relations Service will be pioneering a new “Bridge” program at Wellesley High School. Bridge is a transitional support program designed to help a small but growing group of high-risk and high-need students who are re-entering high school after a psychiatric hospitalization, or who are considered either by themselves or others as being at risk of suicide. It was created on the premise that a timely intervention after a psychiatric hospitalization, substance abuse treatment, or serious medical event might improve a student’s re-entry and at the same time lessen the chances of relapse. In addition to working directly with students, Bridge will help families communicate with therapists, pediatricians, and will connect students, teachers and tutors to each other, to ensure a faster recovery and a smoother transition back to the school environment. The program will be led by staff social worker Lindsey Yamaguchi, LICSW and located in a suite of newly renovated rooms at the High School.
Wellesley High School, the Wellesley Department of Health, the Wellesley Drug and Alcohol Prevention Action Committee (DAPAC), the Wellesley Youth Commission, and students and families all collaborated with HRS in designing the program.
